Comments I am a novice at carpentry. My wish is to be able to do most of my own home repairs. My house is old and is need of a great many repairs. My funds are limited. I received so much pleasure at just being able to nail a board in the wall and apply dress hooks in my son's room. I want to do more carpentry, however, lack the knowledge and skill to do so. It was so motiviating to see your website that i had to contact you. I would like to be able to exchange ideas with another women in regard to carpentry and tools. For example, what is the best hammer to use for carpentry inside the house, etc. Hope to hear from you. Thanks. -Maureen Hanratty

Comments Maureen, fixing your own home is one of the best reasons for womyn to learn carpentry. There are many free help pamphlets at lumber yards and some stores like Home Depot and Lowes run free workshops on how to do many home repairs. Sometimes you can find a used supply place and cut your cost even further for repairs. Garage sales are great places for finding tools and supplies cheaply. Good luck and happy hammering.

Comments I'm interested in making a career change into a construction field. Carpentry seems like a possibility. But I understand it"s difficult to learn unless you get accepted into an apprenticeship. Unfortunately apprenticeships are few and far between in New York. Any suggestions on how to get proper training outside a union program. Thanks.

Comments Megon, look for a job as carpenter's helper or from a remodeler if you are interested in learning a wide variety of skills in residential carpentry. If you would like to specialize look for job as carpenter's helper or material handler with larger contractor and they will place you on job in one area such as framing, finish work or concrete. Whichever way you go check out the quality of work the person or firm does so you learn from the best. Good luck.

Comments sustainable architecture, recycling, barns I am building a house out of garbage in rural southeastern Ohio. I will need a carpenter for June, and July 2000. It is very difficult to find someone I can trust, let a lone a woman. I have to build a kitchen, wood floors (wood rescued from old barns) and wood ceilings. Get in touch with me if you would be interested in this job. You could live on site in a very rustic cabin with an outhouse.

Comments I'd like to work abroad in a few months, as a novice of course, and States could be a possibility. If you know about vacancies or only temporary jobs with traditionnal/renovation carpenters, please let me a note. I'll be back soon. Good hammering!

Comments France, you will probally find plenty of work during the summer months in almost any decent size newspaper. For a woman friendly enviorment..check the local trades colleges in the area you are going and see if you can connect with someone to direct you. Also follow some of the links I have listed to find work. Have fun.
